Openview vs DSTV — the honest comparison
The honest comparison most households use when deciding between the two services. Both run on the same Intelsat 20 satellite, so you can have both on one dish.
| Feature | Openview | DSTV |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly subscription | None — fully free-to-air | R155 - R979 / month |
| Decoder once-off cost | R1,499 - R1,899 | R1,899 - R3,499 (Explora Ultra) |
| Channels included | +/- 80 free channels | +/- 165 channels (Premium) |
| Recording / PVR | Built-in with OVHD HD PVR | Explora Ultra series link |
| Satellite | Intelsat 20 at 68.5E | Intelsat 20 at 68.5E (same dish) |
| Best for | Buyers tired of monthly fees | Sport + premium movie viewers |
Openview wins on
Households who watch SABC, eMovies and the news channels but don't watch SuperSport. The R220-R979/month DSTV fee saved over 24 months pays for the OVHD decoder twice over.
DSTV wins on
Live sport (SuperSport rights stay with MultiChoice), Showmax integration, and the Catch Up library. If someone in the house follows the Springboks or Premier League, DSTV is non-negotiable.
What's included
A one-visit, one-technician install
A standard OVHD install is a one-visit job. The decoder is activated during the install — there's no separate trip to a MultiChoice branch as there is for DSTV smartcard pairing.
- OVHD HD PVR decoder, supplied and activated on-site
- 65cm satellite dish where one is not already in place
- Single or Smart LNB depending on the household setup
- RG6 shielded cable, F-connectors crimped on-site
- Wall-plate finish at the entry point
- Account activation during the install — no MultiChoice branch trip
Where the house already has a DSTV dish pointing at Intelsat 20, we add a multiswitch or convert the LNB so both services run off the same steel. For the dish work itself we follow the same process as our satellite alignment service — signal peaked to 100% quality before the truck leaves.
