The Explora is the decoder most of our Gauteng customers eventually move to, and for good reason. It records three programmes at once, holds around 220 hours of HD content, and stitches together a far cleaner on-screen guide than the old HD PVR. The catch is that it is fussier about dish alignment and cable quality than the older decoders. A standard single-dish install that used to be forgiven at 65 percent signal starts throwing tiles and audio drops on an Explora when the quality drops into the 70s.
That fussiness is why we install a lot of Exploras in Centurion, Moreleta Park, Faerie Glen, and the leafier parts of Randburg and Parkhurst. The trees are tall, the storms are dramatic, and the margin for error on the alignment is smaller than it used to be. Our technicians carry calibrated meters and take a little longer on the alignment step than a cheap installer would. You notice the difference in the first Highveld thunderstorm.

Common questions
Does the Explora need its own dish, or can it share with my HD decoder?+
It can share, but only on a Smart LNB. If you're upgrading from an older setup we'll usually swap the LNB as part of the install — it's a ten-minute job and it stops future signal headaches.
Can I keep my recordings when I swap to a new Explora?+
Sometimes. Recordings on the old decoder's internal drive can't be transferred, but anything on an external Explora Archive drive comes across automatically once we pair it to the new decoder.
Do I need Wi-Fi for the Explora?+
Not for basic TV, but you'll want it for Showmax streaming, Catch Up, and the Xtra View streaming feature. We'll connect it during the install.
Typical pricing
Explora installations start at R2,450 for a straight decoder upgrade on an existing Smart-LNB dish, and R3,950 including a new dish, Smart LNB, and cabling on a first-time install.
